We are used to the US Mail and the regularity and timeliness of delivery. Although countries in Africa are improving in these areas, it still takes significant time for delivery across the ocean. Remember, it is always nicer to receive a card (especially when away from your home country for 4 years at a stretch) as opposed to an "E-Card". So take the extra effort and cost and brighten up their day.
